The city of Burhanpur is the witness of many events of great historic importance. Burhanpur is internationally famous for its fine cloth manufacturing by handloom industry and banana production. Burhanpur is also famous for its muslim monuments, gurudwara of sikh religion, dargah-e-hakimi of dawoodi bohra sect and various other historical monuments like shahi qila, raja ki chhatri, asirgarh fort and many others. |

BADSHAHI QILA OR SHAHI QILA The Shahi Qila is one majestic palace in Burhanpur,located to the east of Tapti river. History of the Shahi Qila states that it was originally built by the farooqui rulers and resided by Shah Jahan, at a time when he was the governor of Burhanpur. Shah Jahan spent a considerable time in Burhanpur and helped add to the Shahi Qila. Diwan-E-Aam and Diwan-E-Khas were built on the terrace of the Qila. The locals calls the Shahi Qila "BHUL BHULAIYA"(i.e. a labyrinth) because the architecture of the Shahi Qila is puzzling and perplexing for a casual visitor. One of the amazing fact is that the Taj Mahal was originally supposed to have been built at Burhanpur. The site chosen fir it still lies vacant near the Tapti river. Mumtaz Mahal, in whose memory the Taj Mahal was built,died in Burhanpur while giving birth to her fourteenth child. |

SHAHI HAMAM OR ROYAL BATH
Shahi Hamam or The Royal Bath is the main attraction point at the Shahi Qila. It was specifically built for Shah Jahan's wife, Begum Mumtaz Mahal, so that she could enjoy a luxurious bath in water scented with khus, saffron and rose petals. Hamam khana was constructed during mughal period. The baths bear an inscription of khan khana Mirza Abdul Rahim Khana, the famous minister of Akbar and Jahangir. The rooms have doomed roof. Shahi hamam is beautifully decorated with paintings on honey comb work. Even today, the ceiling has many intricate paintings, including one painting which is said to have been the inspiration for the Taj Mahal. |
