BURHANPUR

Burhanpur is a mid-size city in Madhya Pradesh state, India situated on the North bank of Tapti river, 340 kilometers southwest of Bhopal and 540 kilometers northeast of Mumbai. It is the administrative state of Burhanpur district.


HISTORY


Burhanpur is a beautiful city with a lot of historical monuments existing in its expanse. The city of burhanpur have been ruled under various emperor as their head quarters because earlier the city was famous as “the gateway of deccan / dakshin ka darwaja”. Burhanpur was an important city under Rastrakuta dynasty during 753-982, Faruqi dynasty, Mughal empire, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Marathas.

Burhanpur got its name and fame during medieval time and got renamed after a well known medieval sufi saint Burhan-ud-din. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan spent a considerable time in this city and helped add to the Shahi Qila. Diwan-i-aam and Diwan-i-khas were built on the trace of the Qila. The main attraction at the palace is the Shahi Hamam or the royal bath, specially built for Shah Jahan’s wife begum Mumtaz Mahal who died here giving birth to her fourteenth child. Even today ceiling of the palace has many intricate painting that have been insipation of the Taj Mahal.


RELIGIOUS PLACES 


The city of burhanpur is also famous for its muslim monuments, gurudwara of sikh religion, dargah-e-hakimi of dawoodi bohra and many templs of hindu religion. Thousands of pilgrim of every religion visit the place from all over the world.
